Job Purpose
This is a fixed term project assistant post on the Scottish Government-funded Gaelic Speech Recognition (GSR) project which seeks to develop a high-quality automatic Gaelic speech recognition (ASR) system for media, education and research. The main purpose of the post is in relation to transcribing text from Gaelic radio programmes and data accuracy duties. The PI is Professor Will Lamb (University of Edinburgh) and the CoI is Professor Roibeard Ó Maolalaigh, who will be the direct line manager for this post.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To be responsible for transcribing recorded speech data according to project specific protocols.
2. To undertake accurate proof-reading, verification, cross-checking and quality assurance of transcribed texts.
3. To report to and advise the project PI / CoIs on any specific editorial matters arising directly out of the transcription process which might be of relevance to enhancing the editorial process.
4. To be responsible for the maintenance of accurate and up to date records with relevant metadata on each speaker and recording.
5. To undertake any other duties relating to the GSR Project as requested by the CoI.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 A degree in Celtic / Gaelic Studies or equivalent experience with evidence of continued professional development in an area relevant to the role
A2 An excellent knowledge of modern Gaelic orthographic conventions.
A3 An excellent knowledge of Scottish Gaelic grammar and syntax.
Desirable:
B1 Good knowledge of University research practice and procedures

C1 Ability to prioritise workload and to work to deadlines.
C2 Excellent planning and organisational skills.
C3 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) to deal with research staff, and the wider academic community and informants.

C5 Ability to work both independently using own initiative and as part of a team and be flexible according to the varying needs of the GSR project.
C6 Excellent IT skills including ability to effectively use transcription software, Word and Excel.
C7 Ability to transcribe accurately speech from Gaelic dialects.

E1 Typically 3 years relevant experience.
E2 Experience of proven decision making, involving independent analysis and judgement.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 5, £24,715 - £28,929 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week), and has funding for up to 12 months from start date.
