An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Infection, Prevention and Control (IP&C) Team at this large foundation NHS Trust.

You will be joining a supportive team who value the contributions of each team member to help deliver our overall aims and objectives in line with the Trust vision “to provide every patient with the care we want for those we love the most”, specifically by reducing the risks of healthcare associated infections. The team has a highly visible role working in all areas throughout the NNUH and comprises of IP&C nurses, Infection Control Doctor, Director of IP&C, support workers and administrative staff. The senior nurse is responsible with other members of the Infection, Prevention & Control [IP&C] team in preventing and controlling infection primarily in an acute hospital setting, but also impacting on the wider healthcare community. This includes investigating, monitoring and raising awareness in the prevention, surveillance, investigation, management and control and control of healthcare associated infections.

You will be responsible for providing day-to-day management of the nursing & administrative staff in the IP&C team. To deputise for the lead nurse as required.

Act as a specialist advisor to clinical and non-clinical staff in all matters relating to infection control both proactively and reactively.

As a member of the Infection Control Team you will maintain effective and efficient communication networks with internal and external agencies. Interacting with both clinical and non-clinical disciplines and other organisations responsible for healthcare provision.

  • Provide clinical and managerial leadership and support to all nursing and clerical staff
  • Act as a resource for support and guidance of own staff and at trust level, as required
  • Work closely with own team, to promote good working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary IP&C team
  • Manage staff performance and development through a process of appraisal, which should include a cycle of constructive performance review and the establishment of a relevant personal development plan
  • Monitor and manage staff sickness and absence
  • Facilitate a system of clinical supervision
  • Ensure all staff have had the relevant training and statutory updating regarding mandatory training, i.e. COSHH, Health and Safety, Infection Control Policy, Resuscitation, Moving and Handling, Fire Lecture and Occupational Health
  • Act as a specialist advisor to clinical and non-clinical staff in all matters relating to infection control both proactively and reactively.
  • Assess the patients needs in context of their infection/infectious disease and the implication it may have on the health of others in ward/department or wider health community and liaise with other clinical staff as appropriate
  • Develop practice in the assessment of health & well being e.g. risk assessment tools in light of local & national recommendations
  • Act in consultation with senior medical/nursing personnel regarding the transfer of patients for isolation purposes to Specialist Infectious Disease/ Isolation Units.
  • Liaise with the appropriate clinical staff, managers, infection control and public health professionals on the discharge and follow-up of clients with an infectious disease or alert organism, giving information on any management and/or specific treatments required.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships & partnerships with others across and within professional boundaries to promote effective and high quality care both within the Trust and outside agencies.
  • Ensure confidentiality is respected at all times and the service provided is non-judgemental.
  • Communicate highly complex and sensitive information to staff, patients, relatives and other members of the public. Required to discuss issues pertaining to assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care.
  • Advise, establish and participate in action research: clinical audit or surveillance activities where appropriate. Collect, collate, analyse and feedback clinical data from audit and surveillance activities in collaboration with those parties concerned.
  • Undertake environmental audit/monitoring of clinical areas as required.
  • As a member of the Infection Control Team, take a lead responsibility in the formulation, evaluation and annual review of the Trust’s Infection Control programme.
  • Develop and maintain the network of infection control link personnel throughout the Trust.
  • Assist in the financial planning for the IP&CT.
  • Financial signatory for other team members to sign off on-call and overtime hours.
  • Manage the efficient and effective use of staff, supplies, provisions and equipment within the designated budgets.
