Job Description

Do you want to work for a worldwide, market-leading, multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy company, providing services globally for over 40 years, with market leading capabilities across the construction, services and rail sectors?

We have an exciting opportunity for you at RSK to join our Materials & Structures business as a Graduate Geomaterials Scientist (petrographer) to provide maternity cover for the Materials Consultancy team in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. For nearly 50 years we have been providing tailored, pragmatic and environmentally sound specialist support services to the property, infrastructure, land development, construction and construction materials sectors, including the provision of expert witness services in dispute resolution.

The successful applicant will be working with a uniquely well-qualified team with a wide range of geological, chemical, materials science and engineering expertise and experience, to assess and advise on a wide range of materials-related issues. You will be willing to learn about, and able to contribute your ideas to the work we do. You will be joining a well-established team of scientists, engineers and technicians at our UKAS accredited laboratories next to the Grand Union Canal. The team is friendly and collaborative, ranging from new starters to international experts. The expected duration of the role is approximately 1 year, although this could become a full-time position dependent on workload and performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Microscopical analysis of both natural and man-made materials.
  • Become competent in the production of petrographic thin sections.
  • Investigating and testing construction materials, both natural, such as rock, stone, slate and aggregate, and man-made, such as concrete, render, plaster and mortar.
  • Assisting on-site tests and investigations.
  • Laboratory testing to ensure that materials comply with the relevant specifications.
  • Equipment calibration and maintenance.
  • Sample management.
  • Collating and analysing test data, preparing test reports.

Desired experience:

The successful candidate is likely to be an enthusiastic graduate with a geology background, possibly with a Masters or PhD, wishing to develop a solid career in geomaterials consultancy and related investigations. We would also expect the person to have an understanding of, and at least basic training in, petrography and optical mineralogy, and express a willingness to learn new skills and techniques within the testing and consultancy side of the business. The post will require both analytical and practical technical skills and an ability to initiate and develop close working relationships with colleagues and clients. A successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a career in often challenging and critical investigations in construction.

Person specification:

  • A good degree in Geology or Materials Science (with knowledge of construction materials)
  • An understanding of and at least basic training in petrography and optical mineralogy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Dynamic work ethic to learn and develop new skills
  • Work professionally as part of a team
  • Good IT skills
  • Full UK driving licence.

Salary and benefits:

  • £23-26,000, commensurate with education and experience
  • Contributory Pension Scheme
  • A flexible benefits programme including the option to buy additional holidays, childcare vouchers and private healthcare
  • Regular training and career development
