QW9RdW1rVzNmcjJIMTdSOVNZTkZ6QT09

Job Description

Full time, fixed term contract. There is funding to advertise for a PDRA on FA6 100% FTE for a maximum 6 months, restricted to end by 31.12.2023.

The project this role will work on is focussed on plant gene identification and characterisation and inter-species transfer of the resistance using conventional and gene editing methodologies.

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work with the Project Team and commercial seed company collaborators in the BBSRC funded project to exploit sources of broad-spectrum, potentially durable resistance to the plant virus turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) in commercial vegetable brassicas.

Working with the Elizabeth Creak Horticultural Centre (ECHTC) at the University of Warwick and Dr Charlotte Nellist at NIAB-EMR the first aim will be to knock out the specific gene at the orthologous locus of retr01 in Brassica oleracea using CRISPR-Cas. Working with the commercial seed company, the second aim will be on phenotyping of current and development of further B. oleracea lines possessing retr01 by conventional means.

Collaborative work between Dr Nellist and commercial seed company partners will be related to the design and evaluation of new within-gene molecular markers capable of reliably identifying plants possessing retr01 to aid the development of B. oleracea plant lines homozygous for retr01.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure (£32,411). Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure (£33,348).

You will also have experience of working in some of the following disciplines, plant molecular biology / plant pathology / plant genomics. Experience of supervising students would be desirable.

We believe that collegiality, openness, inclusivity and diversity are essential for an excellent environment; this ethic has enabled us to gain an Athena SWAN Silver award. We are dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, so if you are excited by this role, we encourage you to apply, even if your past experience does not match exactly. We also encourage applications from all groups with protected characteristics (traditionally under-represented in STEM fields).

In your application, you can also include any career breaks you may have taken (e.g. parental/caring/long-term sick leave, part-time work, secondments) or any periods where you were unable or restricted to work because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
