The Centre for Capacity Research (CCR) at LSTM, led by Professor Imelda Bates, along with her team, is responsible for research into the technical design, implementation and tracking of capacity strengthening activities in health and development programmes. The CCR team work in collaboration with funders, researchers, implementers and decision makers in many countries.

To enable the continued success of the team, we are looking to appoint a Research Assistant to support several CCR projects, primarily PACTS. PACTS is a four-year NIHR-funded Global Health Group that aims to improve the routine use of evidence-based, patient-centred sickle cell disease management in Nigeria, Ghana, and Zambia. This role will entail working closely with Dr Tara Tancred and helping to plan and support implementation research activities, including, but not limited to: capacity strengthening activities with PhD candidates, other members of the study consortium, and research assistants in partner countries; helping to organize stakeholder and other participatory workshops; design of data collection instruments; analysis of data; and writing of reports. Data will predominantly include process and qualitative data, though there will be some quantitative data as well.

It is essential that you have a master’s degree in a health-related discipline. The ideal candidate will have training or research experience specific to implementation research, and a strong background in qualitative research but also in mixed methods approaches. They must be able to demonstrate very good data analysis, writing, and organizational skills.

You will be required to demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm in your approach to work, with proven communication skills. You must be able to work productively as part of a multi-cultural, multidisciplinary team. It is desirable that the successful candidate has some experience of health systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. Topical knowledge around sickle cell disease would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to CCR’s other projects which aim to build research capacity of partner organisations, at both the individual and institutional level, using a variety of evidence-informed approaches.

Please note the post will involve overseas travel (to Ghana, Nigeria, or Zambia) to support capacity strengthening activities and consortium meetings as required.

Informal enquiries can be made to: tara.tancred@lstmed.ac.uk

Additional benefits of joining LSTM:

  • 30 days annual leave, plus bank holidays, plus Christmas closure days
  • Generous occupational pension schemes
  • Affiliated, discounted staff membership to the University of Liverpool Sports Centre
  • Plus, a host of additional family friendly policies

Closing Date: 29th March 2023

Application Process:

Due to the volume of applications, we receive, we may close our vacancies early. It is therefore advisable to apply as early as possible if you would like to be considered for a role.

Please note that the successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS and/or other international criminal record check prior to appointment. Outcome must be satisfactory to LSTM, as the duties of this post will involve direct contact with vulnerable adults.
