The Department’s key role is to “protect and improve lifelong health and wellbeing of everyone in West Sussex, by commissioning evidence-based services and empowering people to make healthier choices."

The Health Protection Team lead and deliver the following key areas:

  • Infection diseases
  • Non-infectious environmental hazards to health
  • Emergency preparedness, resilience and response
  • Working with stakeholders to improve immunisation and cancer screening programmes.

Salary:
£43,516 - £46,549 per annum
Working Pattern: Full time, 37 hours per week – flexible working available
Location: County Hall, Chichester

As our Advanced Public Health Practitioner, you will support infection prevention and control workstreams and the wider health protection agenda. The Health Protection Team are at the forefront of key strategies and programmes that impact on the health and wellbeing of the population whilst contributing to the planning and implementation of health improvement initiatives that impact on health and wellbeing.

You will play a key role in forging partnerships with and influencing all key stakeholders with a focus on your portfolio areas of responsibility. You will be responsible for oversight of implementation and steering delivery to support key elements of the Council’s public health vision and strategic plan.

Support public health Leads to develop, and hold the overview of implementation, monitoring and quality of key public health programmes.

You will work with partners to ensure the programmes are aligned with the broader context, and are visible as well as tailored to reduce health inequalities and improve health and wellbeing.


Experience and Skills


Key Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate problems and resolve issues independently, planning solutions and making sound pragmatic decisions which will have a direct impact on the business / service. Ability to challenge existing practices and identify innovative solutions.
  • Highly developed analytical and judgemental skills to diagnose, research, analyse and interpret highly complex or technical information to make effective business strategies and decisions.
  • Ability to present written information such as reports and briefings to internal and external stakeholders that will impact on wider service areas and improve services and outcomes for residents within West Sussex.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills in order to interact effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders and create and maintain effective working relationships. Including the ability to influence stakeholders to make decisions that they would not otherwise make, to promote understanding of the health improvement areas and to successfully advise and guide stakeholders to make sound decisions which could have a significant impact
  • Ability to apply professional project and programme management skills to analyse and make judgements based on principles to address complex issues of a technical, professional, resource or people related nature.
  • Effective people management skills including performance management skills and the ability to provide direction and support to individuals and teams. Ability to forward plan over the long term, making effective judgements in order to continuously develop and review the effectiveness of service and staff to meet deadlines and objectives.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent post graduate qualification in Public Health or related subject or experience, demonstrating that level of applied public health technical knowledge in researching, analysing and evaluating arguments and information.
  • Registered nurse, environmental health officer, or allied health professional with at least 3 years’ post registration experience.
  • Experience of working within a Public Health, Healthcare or other relevant setting.
  • Experience of working and leading programmes within a multi-agency environment and developing and delivering business improvements, preferably within a performance management framework.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering or co-ordinating a quality customer focused service to others.
