Children North East is a large North East based children’s charity that works across the region, with some work extending across England, Wales and Scotland. We exist because growing up can be hard. We want all babies, children and young people to be happy and healthy, and to grow up feeling safe and loved, resilient to the challenges they may face, and valued and confident.

We are looking for a Neurodiversity project coordinator who is experienced in working with children and young people with neurodivergence to enhance our current work.

You will provide day to day group and 1:1 support, initial assessment, and ongoing assessment which ensures that the health and wellbeing of young people aged between 11– 25 years in the North East is provided to the highest standards.

This role will work closely with the Neurodiversity Team Manager, Neurodiversity Clinical Coordinator and Mental Health Youth Workers, to ensure that referrals are distributed across the team, fairly and ethically.

This post will be responsible to hold a caseload of more complex cases as determined and agreed by the Neurodiversity Team Manager.

Main Responsibilities

  • To work within the policies, guidelines, procedures and code of conduct of Children North East.
  • To develop and maintain appropriate working relationships adhering to Children North East’s values and behaviours.
  • To support the Neurodiversity Team Manager with service development.
  • To contribute to the coordination, delivery, and day to day support of neurodiversity work, monitoring and evaluating service delivery in line with agreed outputs and outcomes.
  • To work within the Youth Service and Poverty Proofing© Service and with external partners to meet the needs of children and young people experiencing emotional wellbeing and/or mental health issues.
  • Improve outcomes for children and young people between the ages of 11 – 25 living in the North East, enabling them to make informed choices about issues which affect their emotional wellbeing and mental health.
  • To contribute to the planning and delivery of charity wide training opportunities for staff.
  • To lead on the planning and delivery of neurodiversity group work and 1:1 models to be shared within the Youth Service and Poverty Proofing© Service.
  • To provide one to one support and promote a safe and young people friendly environment to establish a relationship of trust.
  • To signpost/refer children and young people to other specialist services, including children and young people’s services.
  • Build a strong relationship with statutory mental health services to support the assessment and post-diagnosis process for neurodivergent children and young people.
  • To advocate on behalf of children and young people on issues that are important to them.
  • To actively engage in scheduled meetings with stakeholders and share information with the Neurodiversity and Counselling Team Managers.
  • Coordinate and manage peer supervision to students on placement who are providing support to neurodivergent young people.
  • Follow Children North East’s Safeguarding policy and procedures so as to ensure children and young people’s wellbeing and safety, ensuring the quality of provision to clients.
  • To provide coordinator support for the Youth Service and Poverty Proofing© Service building safeguarding procedures.
  • Promote a positive culture of safeguarding children, young people, and adults.
  • To maintain accurate and confidential records appropriate to the service.
  • To work with the Neurodiversity Team Manager to produce appropriate project reports, monitoring and evaluation information directly related to identified targets, and case studies.
  • To ensure children and young people’s rights are valued and respected, making sure service users inform and influence decision making that brings about change.
  • To develop excellent working relationships with other staff and services at Children North East.
  • To link directly other statutory and voluntary organisations in order to contribute to the common ambition to improve the emotional wellbeing and mental health of young people, including training opportunities with both external organisations and Children North East.
  • To promote and publicise the work of Children North East to young people, professionals, media and the local community in partnership with senior management.
  • To assist the Neurodiversity Team Manager in overseeing mental health youth workers’ health and safety including lone working and risk assessment.
  • Work alongside the Neurodiversity Team Manager and Clinical Coordinator, monitoring the balance between counsellor and mental health youth worker capacity and client demand and keep client waiting times to the acceptable levels, which may be changed from time to time.
  • Take responsibility alongside the Clinical Coordinator/s for client feedback, ensuring comments are reviewed and acted on as appropriate.
