Job Description
This is an exciting new role to work collaboratively under the guidance and supervision of the clinical nurse specialists and advanced nurse practitioners within the Southampton Sarcoma Service at UHS. We are looking for an organised, enthusiastic and motivated team player with excellent communication, IT and administrative skills who will be able to help us support patients and their carers though the initial cancer diagnostic pathway.
The post holder will act as a point of contact for patients and enable them to progress smoothly through the diagnostic pathway ensuring they have appointments, investigations, procedures and treatment booked in a timely way.
It is expected that the post holder will work autonomously, using their own initiative and within the specialist Sarcoma service. The service covers a large geographical area and works in partnership with the London Sarcoma Service.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- The post-holder will work both directly and indirectly with patients and their carers to assist in coordinating their hospital care journey and contributing to effective communication between patients, carers and staff,
- You will act as centralised point of contact for patients, receiving, triaging, and responding to face to face, telephone and written queries, liaising and escalating to clinical team/ operational teams as required.
- Provide explanations of procedures and processes to patients and their family regarding the pathway, verbally and by sending out relevant trust leaflets and instruction packs where appropriate.
- Support/accompany patients as appropriate when attending for investigations.
- Act as a point of contact for diagnostic services, both internal and external to the trust, ensuring coordination of all necessary appointments and investigations.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
It is expected that the post holder will work autonomously, using their own initiative, and within a specialised team.
We are looking for an organised, enthusiastic and motivated team player with excellent communication, IT and administrative skills who will be able to help us support patients and their carers though the initial cancer diagnostic pathway.
They post holder will communicate regularly with patients to ensure that they are aware of upcoming appointments, provide relevant information and offer practical support, being sensitive to the fact that patients may be anxious and distressed. The post holder will participate in the multidisciplinary meetings and will also help to ensure the smooth running of the virtual screening process for new referrals into the service. They will work alongside consultants within surgery, oncology, radiology and pathology, the nursing service and members of the admin service to include the MDT coordinator, secretaries and the two week wait office (2ww).
The post holder is expected to be experienced within the hospital setting with knowledge of specialised terminology including Cancer Waiting Times Guidance relating to cancer pathways, and to navigate patients through their diagnostics and treatment pathways within these principles.
The role is full time, based at Southampton General Hospital with the option for some remote working where appropriate.
