The role

The Aberystwyth School of Veterinary Science is seeking to appoint a highly motivated veterinary surgeon, experienced in teaching and research, to join its team. The post-holder will teach across a range of first and second-year subjects, focussing particularly, but not exclusively, on anatomy and physiology. The course is part of a joint degree with the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and the successful candidate will work closely with colleagues at Aberystwyth and the RVC. They will develop their own research programme and, as part of an enthusiastic and dedicated team, will support the veterinary profession in Wales and raise awareness of veterinary science in schools throughout Wales.

What you’ll do

This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.

  • Teaching first- and second-year BVSc students in pre-clinical subjects, particularly those that include veterinary physiology and anatomy, and bringing a clinical perspective from personal experience. Providing teaching and practical support to other modules as required e.g., Principles of Science, Animal Husbandry. These duties include arranging and implementing the timetable, setting and marking assessments, and providing relevant academic support to students.
  • Engaging with stakeholders, school-level students and their teachers to raise awareness of veterinary science in Wales and promote the Veterinary School.
  • Developing a programme of research relevant to the post and university, as agreed with the line manager.
  • Working closely with colleagues at the Royal Veterinary College to ensure students are fully prepared to move across to the RVC from their third year.
  • Teaching students in other courses within the Department of Life Sciences, as agreed with the line manager.
  • Developing a personal plan of development, through the University’s Effective Contribution Scheme.
  • Balancing the competing pressures of teaching, scholarship and administrative demands and deadlines.
  • To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills required:

Essential

  • Veterinary Science degree
  • Registered, or registrable, as a veterinary surgeon with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
  • Demonstrable experience in teaching within a university environment.
  • Clinical experience as a veterinary surgeon within the previous three years
  • Successful implementation of a research programme with demonstrable outputs
  • Experience of working effectively within a team to achieve shared objectives and of engaging with colleagues at all levels of an organisation;
  • A well-developed knowledge of standard IT packages and the ability to adapt to using a range of end-user systems.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills
  • A demonstrable interest in continuing professional development
  • An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.

Desirable

  • PhD in veterinary science discipline
  • Post graduate teaching qualification
  • Experience of working for, or in collaboration with, the Royal Veterinary College
  • Successful supervision of postgraduate students and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of veterinary practice in Wales
  • Experience in computer-based programmes teaching anatomy and/or physiology.
  • Oral (spoken) Welsh & Written Welsh Level C1*
