Job Description

John Crane is a Global Leader in the industry with an excellent reputation and they are now looking to recruit a Mechanical Engineer II/III to join the Non-Cartridge Product Group.

This role can be based either in SLOUGH or MANCHESTER.

The Team

The Non-Cartridge Product Group review and process applications requests for non-cartridge mechanical seals, supporting internal sales and service organisation across the world. They offer product recommendation, perform advanced seal calculations using internal tools, review seal failures and provide recommendations. Create new or update existing standards to control design criteria, application of products and procedures.

The Role

Reporting into the Non-Cartridge Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for performing a variety of engineering and design tasks on the specified non-cartridge products. This job requires the use of engineering judgment, and the application of standard engineering techniques to develop designs and solutions for customer.

This is a fast-paced and challenging role, with a high level of responsibility (for Engineer III).

Duties & Responsibilities

The Responsibilities

Applications:

  • Review & processing of Application Requests.
  • Following standard techniques and procedures, selection / application of standard or special seal products to meet customers' needs.
  • Generation of engineering proposals / specifications for standard or special products, including determining cost-effective materials for production.
  • Seal calculations (including leakage calculations, heat generation, balance temp, flow rates etc.)
  • More advanced use of CSTEDY & similar tools for in-depth design analysis.
  • Other engineering calculations as required. *
  • Provide applications guidance to CAD Engineers to complete layout (GA) and detail drawings
  • Prepare material and other relevant product specifications for internal and external use
  • Field troubleshooting, including analysis of problems / recommendation & implementation of appropriate solutions, meeting with customers in plant or at customer’s site to resolve satisfactorily
  • Detailed failure analysis activities, including investigation / reporting / resolution. *
  • Identify & evaluate Value Engineering initiatives.
  • Approve / reject in-house manufactured or bought out parts that do not conform to drawing specification (Concessions/Deviations).

  • This responsibility is for Engineer III.

Product Development:

  • Support the transition of a product from development into production.
  • Creation of test specifications & plans.
  • Product assembly / disassembly & installation of products on to test rigs.
  • Manage / perform / monitor various forms of static / dynamic seal test projects to specified test criteria, whether as part of product development or for customer-specific tests.
  • Recording of test results.
  • Creation of test reports.
  • Evaluation of test results. General support to lab / test activities as required, e.g. preparation & commissioning of test rigs, preparation of seal components (this may include lapping & polishing and other processes at times), design of test adaptors / fixtures, & other relevant CAD design work, maintenance of test facilities & associated plant etc.
  • Support internal and external practical training, customer visits and customer witness tests as required. *
  • Contribute to quality reporting / CAR process, reporting back to other parts of the business as appropriate.
  • Along with the other team members, contribute to maintaining a safe and efficient working environment, including following appropriate HSE procedures / performance of risk assessments as appropriate.
  • Along with other team members, promote a culture of continuous improvement in housekeeping, work processes, etc.
  • This responsibility is for Engineer III.

Other:

  • Provide detailed technical presentations to customers in order to support sales.
  • Deliver basic technical training externally to customers as required. *
  • Manage and report personal workload, forecast job lead-times to meet customer and departmental objectives.
  • Raise / process / approve Global engineering Change Notice (GCN) requests.
  • Demonstrable relevant experience in an application / CAD role (2D and 3D design), with relevant product / equipment / industry knowledge - desirable not mandatory.
  • Works independently and as part of a global team.
  • Able to convey technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • This responsibility is for Engineer III.

The Individual

  • An accredited BEng degree or overseas equivalent, although a technical high school diploma (HND/HNC) with proven experience may be considered. Engineer may be pursuing local ‘Chartered’ status (e.g., CEng. in UK, overseas equivalent).
  • Manufacturing, oil and gas, pump manufacturers, process industry background.
  • Good knowledge of Solid Edge (or similar 3D CAD systems), both for the creation of parts and assemblies - advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Good knowledge of English, written and spoken.
  • Attitude to teamwork and excellent communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to make decisions based on the available technical info.
  • Ability to work by objectives and organize their activities to meet deadlines.
