Working for our organisation

The Microbiology laboratory is a large NHS laboratory serving both NUH campuses, as well as Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust and Clinical Commissioning Groups with a total population of ~640,000. The department is actively involved in the clinical management of microbiological and virological infection with regular ward rounds and liaison with the specialist units, works closely with colleagues in Infectious Diseases and supports antimicrobial stewardship within the trust and community.

The Infectious Diseases and OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy) Department is based at the City Campus. For the OPAT service there will be review of patients in the Intravenous Infusion Centre, review via virtual ward rounds and face to face in clinic. There will be liaison with a wide variety of specialties. At City Campus there is a 13 bed, dedicated Infectious Disease Ward, which has seven en-suite side rooms, five with monitored, negative pressure ventilation. The ward has recently been refurbished. Patients are admitted from the emergency medical admission wards, transferred from other departments within the Trust, or other hospitals within the region. Patients with a wide range of infections are seen including HIV, tuberculosis, returned travellers, community and hospital acquired infections, and pyrexia of unknown origin. Duties in Infectious Diseases include contributions to an outpatient clinic, inpatient care and out of hours on call.
