DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY

The Department of Sociology at Warwick has a strong tradition of critical, public-facing, and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of society, with cutting-edge research on social theory, race and ethnicity, gender and feminism, the sociology of employment, social inequalities, and global social change dating from the 1970s. Our commitment to equality and diversity is reflected not only in our staff but also our student body.

The successful candidate will join a department that supports staff to produce excellent research and teaching with wider-reaching impact and good citizens who have a wide societal impact. Teaching is at the core of our departmental culture, and we are looking for academic colleagues who take the co-production of knowledge with our students as seriously as we do. Decolonising the curriculum underpins our pedagogic philosophy in Sociology.

Our strategic plan places people at the centre; our staff and students engage in ideas that have lasting impact.

PEOPLE

We are working to enhance student experience by offering new programmes in Sociology, Criminology, and in collaboration with departments across the Faculty of Social Sciences, including the development of placement modules to enhance employability and a new MA programme in Gender and Sexuality. We actively support equality and diversity and staff and student wellbeing, and our ongoing work in this area has been recognised through a Silver Athena Swan Award (2023). Across our research, teaching, and public engagement activities, we are committed to environmental sustainability, social justice, and addressing social inequalities. We continue to foster the next generation of researchers through our postgraduate and early career researcher communities.

IDEAS

We aim to create an environment in which students are co-producers of knowledge; academic staff are creators of excellent research, and professional services staff, as part of continuing engagement, feel able to express and implement creative responses to the challenging University environment. We have two research centres: the Social Theory Centre and the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender. We also have a close working relationship with the Centre of Interdisciplinary Methodologies. Research within the Department of Sociology covers the broad span of the discipline and is organised in terms of six research clusters (Theory, Methodology and Practice; Feminism, Gender and Sexuality; Race, Ethnicity and Migration; Crime, Rights and Social Justice; Science, Expertise and Markets; Climate and Environment). We achieved a ranking of 10th in REF 2021.

RELEVANCE

We develop opportunities for staff and students to engage with the local community through meaningful impact activities. Students and staff are encouraged to fully engage with public engagement and impact. We optimise reach and significance of the department by supporting staff to undertake distinguished positions in external boards and associations.
