Applications are invited for An Education Fellow in Genomics (Health Education England Supported) commencing August 2023 for 12 Months.

The post comprises of two components. 40% will be protected time spent on a HEE project tailored to the individuals interests and experience and aligned to HEE’s mandate of improving healthcare education and patient care across the region. This would be a mainstreaming genomics project that could involve any of the multiple specialities that use genomics testing for diagnostic or management purposes. The remaining 60% will be spent as service work in the Clinical Genetics Service at the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, City Hospital Campus. This can also be tailored to the individuals interests and experience. This post has no out of hours commitment.

Applications are welcome from trainees from a wide range of specialities. Fellows may be trainees on OOP or trainees who have opted to work less Than full time in their training programme or trainees taking time between foundation and core training or core training and higher training. Trainees that have a national training number will need to have agreement from their TPD to be placed in our Trust and work less than full time or to be Out of Programme.

Main duties of the job

This post is for An Education Fellow in Genomics (Health Education England Supported) commencing August 2023 for 12 Months.

The appointee will be expected to fulfil the following duties

  • Attend outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in Urgent Prenatal Clinic and Ward Referral rota depending on experience
  • Dictate post-clinic letters promptly.
  • Maintain continued professional development.
  • Attend educational and multidisciplinary sessions.
  • Undertake audit at various times throughout the rotations.
  • Teach medical students and other medical personnel as directed.
  • Co-operate with members of the personnel department when monitoring hours of work and other personnel issues.
  • Attend induction at start of rotation.
  • Comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave

Working for our organisation

The Nottingham Clinical Genetics Service provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory genetics service to a population of approximately 2.3 million in the Mid-Trent region, including Nottinghamshire, North Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Southern Derbyshire and North Leicestershire. There are 8 Consultants (7.1 WTE), 11 Genetic Counsellors (9.79 WTE), and 3 Specialty Trainees. In addition to local clinics in Nottingham, outreach clinics are also provided in Mansfield, Derby, Grantham, Lincoln, Skegness and Boston. The Service also runs specialised clinics including The Ataxia Telangiectasia national clinic, adult learning disabilities, child development, cardiology, renal, endocrine, lymphoedema, ophthalmology, disorders of sexual differentiation and skeletal dysplasia clinics

The post holders will be based in the Clinical Genetics Department where experience is gained in planning and attending out-patient clinics, arranging genomic testing, urgent referrals, dealing with queries, using specialised databases, and working closely with the Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics laboratories.

Within ‘Nottingham University Hospitals’ management structures, Clinical Genetics is in the Clinical Division of Family Health.

1. Gain an understanding of the role of genomics in medicine. This will be achieved through:

  • Clinical experience of working in the Clinical Genetics department
  • Formal and informal teaching and
  • Online resources available through the HEE established Genomics Education Programme.

2. Embedding genomic medicine in the NHS is a key current priority for NHS England. The Fellow will be supported to engage with multidisciplinary teams at local and regional level to increase appropriate utilisation of the National Genomic Test Directory published by NHS England. This will be achieved through:

  • Participation in MDT sessions between relevant speciality and genetics.
  • Acting as the point of contact facilitating collaboration between mainstream speciality and Clinical Genetics service.
  • Delivering face-to-face or online ‘Mainstreaming Genomics Education’ packages that have been developed in our department.

The Clinical Genetics service in NUH already works with adult and paediatric MDTs across a wide range of specialities and the Fellow can work in one or more areas depending on their previous experience, future career plans and local need identified by the service.

3. A national level genomic education opportunity will also be made available through participation in the GeNotes Project, which had a beta launch in 2022. This is a ‘just in time’ educational resource for healthcare professionals working in the NHS and clinicians from our department are already involved in a number of pilot GeNotes projects.

4. The Fellow will undertake an audit or service evaluation project towards the end of the placement to assess the impact of their work, so that good practice can be sustained and areas for future improvement identified.

Essential criteria

  • Full GMC registration

Desirable criteria

  • Membership of appropriate Royal College. Eg MRCP, MRCPCH, MRCPath, MRCOG, MRCOphth, or equivalent overseas qualification
  • Higher degree ( eg MSc , MA , MD, PhD etc)
  • Teaching Qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Competent in the management of adult and/or paediatric diseases.
  • Clinical Knowledge and Expertise: Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence based practice
  • IT Skills, ability to use web browser, excel, word etc.
  • Evidence of clinical expertise in adult and or paediatric medicine

Desirable criteria

  • Previous clinical or research experience in clinical genetics
  • Previous teaching experience

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to work in a team
  • Able to work flexibly in a changing health service
  • Able to use the Trust’s IT support systems

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to teach and support junior staff and undergraduates effectively.

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit
  • Experience in undertaking original research.
  • Peer-reviewed publications
