Tooley Foster is an established architectural practice located in Buckhurst Hill. For 130 years, we have been providing top-quality architectural services to private and public sector clients throughout the UK. We are looking for an Architectural Technologist/Technician to join our team and help us deliver outstanding projects.
Working with us, your time will be divided between office (2 days) and remote working (3 days). Our Buckhurst Hill office is located on the edge of London and is only a 25-minute tube ride to Liverpool Street on the Central Line. We typically employ staff from all over London, and also into Essex and Hertfordshire so if you’re able to commute, we’d love to hear from you.
About the role:
As an Architectural Technologist/Technician at Tooley Foster, you will be responsible for working across all RIBA work stages, preparing detailed technical design information during RIBA Stage 4, and obtaining initial approvals for statutory and local approval authorities. You will also be producing energy assessments of buildings at RIBA Stages 2 or 3. Delivery of construction information will include the use of BIM, CAD and energy modelling software.
Key duties:
Prepare detailed technical design information
Assess client and user needs and agree on project brief
Advise on environmental and regulatory legal requirements
Obtain initial approvals from various authorities
Produce surveys and detailed specifications for materials and processes
Liaise with and produce documentation for approval authorities
Carry out design-stage risk assessments
Assist with tender and contract evaluation
Ensure compliance with legal and professional requirements
Programme work schedules and carry out inspections
Evaluate feedback and report on contractor performance
Advise on refurbishment, repair, reuse, recycling and deconstruction of buildings
Conduct regular site visits to ensure project progress and budget adherence
Resolve issues during construction
Minimise environmental impact
Administer contracts and project certifications
Manage trainee technologists and contribute to business operations
Prepare Building Owners Manuals
Our ideal candidate:
We are looking for an individual who has a genuine passion for the science and technology involved in buildings and meets the following requirements.
Qualifications/Experience:
CIAT Accredited Honours undergraduate degree in architectural technology
3 years’ experience of a similar role
The candidate should have at least three years of experience using AutoCAD, Revit and Archicad.
Desirable experience includes Passivhaus/Low-energy detailing, contract administration, and a CSCS card.
Knowledge:
On-site Health and Safety practice
Thorough knowledge of Building Regulations
Building Contracts
Knowledge of sustainability issues
Knowledge of low energy design
Skills:
Able to follow office procedures
Able to meet with other professionals and clients to agree on the project brief
Good understanding of how the design aspects of a construction project influence and relate to performance and functional issues, so that practical questions can be addressed at the outset
Able to evaluate and advise on environmental, legal and regulatory issues
Can assess what surveys are required before work can commence and ensure such surveys are undertaken and their results are fed into the project
Can liaise with appropriate authorities (e.g. planning enquiries and building inspectors) when producing documentation for statutory approval
Can produce, analyse and advise on detailed specifications for suitable materials or processes to be used
Can carry out design-stage risk assessments
Can prepare contract documents and administer contracts and project certifications
Can manage the work of trainee technologists and contribute to the overall running of the business
Good computer skills and digital information management discipline
Good verbal and written communication skills
Good understanding of building physics/ impact of moisture & thermal insulation and how these affect the detailed design of buildings
